Ramya Harishankar 

A protégé of legendary gurus, the late Swamimalai K. Rajaratnam and Padma Bushan Kalanidhi Narayanan, Ramya Harishankar combines the grace, elegance and suppleness of  the Vazhuvoor School of Bharathanatyam  with the distinctive ability to express all shades of emotion with sensitivity and intuition. She has performed as a soloist all over the world. In 1982, she started the Arpana School of Dance, which has grown to become  a premiere school of Bharathanatyam in California. 

​As a teacher, she has introduced several hundreds of youth both at her school and through Segerstrom Centerfor the Arts. As a choreographer, she has over 15 full length productions to her credit, many of which have raised nearly $100,000 for charities worldwide.



Under her guidance, the Arpana company has toured the US, Europe, India, and more recently, Japan.She also regularly conducts workshops on Bharathanatyam and particularly in North America, Europe and Asia. As a producer, she has co-convened the first seminar on Indian dance in California and hads presented over 50 Indian dance soloists/companies  to Southern California audiences. Besides receiving several awards, citations and grants from state and national agencies she is also the recipient of the  Kala Seva Bharathi from Bharat Kalachar, Chennai, India, the Helene Modjeska Cultural Legacy award from Arts OC and a two-time National Endowment of the Arts Choreography fellow.
